What Is Rebirthing Breathwork? How It Works & What to Expect

If you have heard the words “Rebirthing Breathwork” and wondered what actually happens in a session, this guide is for you. No dramatic promises — just a clear explanation of the breathing practice, the experience, and what to know before you begin.

Short answer: Rebirthing Breathwork is a form of conscious connected breathing. Instead of leaving a long pause between the inhale and exhale, the breath moves in a continuous, relaxed rhythm. In a guided session, attention is placed on both the breath and the physical or emotional experience that arises.

People usually discover breathwork for very ordinary reasons. They may feel mentally busy, emotionally stuck, stressed by work or relationships, or simply curious about why changing the way we breathe can change the way a moment feels.

Rebirthing is one approach within the much wider world of breathwork. It is best understood as an experiential practice rather than a quick technique that promises to “fix” everything. A session gives you time to breathe consciously, notice yourself more closely, and stay present with the experience instead of rushing through it.

What Is Rebirthing Breathwork?

At the centre of Rebirthing Breathwork is Conscious Connected Breathing. The inhale flows into the exhale, and the exhale flows back into the next inhale without deliberately holding the breath in between.

The word “rebirthing” can sound mysterious when you first hear it. In practice, the work is centred on breathing, awareness and the personal process that unfolds during a session. Different schools and facilitators may explain its philosophy in different ways, but the breathing experience itself should be approached with care rather than exaggerated claims.

The purpose is not to force an experience. It is to create enough space to notice what is already happening within you.

How Does Rebirthing Breathwork Work?

Breathing is automatic, but it is also one of the body processes we can consciously influence. During a Rebirthing session, you intentionally give the breath your attention and maintain a connected rhythm for a period of time.

That change in breathing and attention can make the experience feel very different from simply lying down and relaxing. You may become more aware of physical sensations, thoughts, emotions, tension or changes in your energy and alertness. There is no single “correct” emotional experience that everyone must have.

It is also important to separate broad breathwork research from claims about one particular method. Research across breathwork practices suggests potential benefits for self-reported stress and some mental-health outcomes, but the evidence varies by technique and study quality. Rebirthing Breathwork should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed treatment or cure.

Learning breathwork is not only about technique. Guidance, observation, practice and integration are part of the process.

What Happens During a Rebirthing Breathwork Session?

A good session begins before the breathing itself. There should be time to talk about why you have come, how you are feeling, relevant health considerations, and what the session may involve.

1. A short conversation

You speak with the facilitator about your intention, questions and anything important they should know before beginning.

2. Getting comfortable

The practice is commonly done lying down in a comfortable setting where you can give your attention to the breath without needing to perform or achieve anything.

3. Connected breathing

The facilitator guides you into a continuous breathing rhythm. Their role is not to manufacture an emotional reaction, but to support the breathing process and respond appropriately to what is happening.

4. Time to settle and integrate

After the active breathing, there should be space to rest, notice how you feel and gradually return to ordinary activity. Integration is part of the session, not an afterthought.

What Might You Feel During Breathwork?

Experiences vary. One person may feel quiet and deeply relaxed; another may notice restlessness, tingling, warmth, changes in bodily sensation, memories or emotion. Sometimes very little happens outwardly — and that does not mean the session “failed.”

This is one reason we do not like telling someone in advance exactly what they are going to experience. Expectations can make people chase an outcome instead of paying attention to their own process.

Can Breathwork Help When Life Feels Stressful?

Stress is one of the reasons many people become curious about breathing practices. Conscious breathing can offer a deliberate pause from the speed of everyday life and give you a structured way to bring attention back to the present moment.

Research on breathwork more broadly is encouraging but should be described carefully. A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found small-to-medium improvements in self-reported stress compared with control conditions, while also calling for more rigorous research. That does not mean every breathing method works identically, or that breathwork replaces professional mental-health or medical care.

For everyday wellbeing, it may be more useful to ask, “Does this practice help me become more aware of how I respond to stress?” rather than expecting one session to remove every difficult feeling from life.

A calm setting can support reflection, but the quality of facilitation and appropriate screening matter more than the setting itself.

Is Rebirthing Breathwork Safe for Everyone?

Important: Breathwork can be physically and emotionally intense for some people. If you are pregnant, have cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, seizure disorders, glaucoma, significant medical concerns, or are receiving treatment for a serious mental-health condition, speak with an appropriate healthcare professional and inform the facilitator before participating.

A responsible facilitator should ask relevant screening questions and be willing to slow down, modify or stop a practice when needed. Feeling pressured to “push through” is not a requirement for meaningful breathwork.

How Do I Begin Rebirthing Breathwork?

If you are completely new, beginning with a guided individual session can help you understand the breathing pattern and ask questions in real time. If your interest is professional, look beyond the number of training days and ask about personal practice, supervision, facilitation experience, lineage, ethics and what is actually required before certification.

Quick Questions People Ask About Rebirthing Breathwork

Is Rebirthing the same as ordinary breathwork?

No. “Breathwork” is a broad term covering many breathing practices. Rebirthing Breathwork is a specific approach built around conscious connected breathing and its own training tradition.

Do I need previous meditation or yoga experience?

No. Previous experience may help you feel familiar with body awareness, but it is not necessary for a first guided session.

Will one session solve stress or emotional problems?

No responsible practitioner can promise that. A session may be meaningful or supportive, but breathwork should not be marketed as a guaranteed cure for stress, trauma, anxiety or other health conditions.

Can I learn to facilitate Rebirthing Breathwork professionally?

Yes, professional training pathways exist. Before choosing one, look carefully at the depth of training, practical experience, supervision and certification requirements rather than choosing only by price or duration.

Very helpful article. I had heard about Rebirthing Breathwork before but never really understood how it was different from other breathwork practices. The explanation about connected breathing and what to expect in a session made it much clearer. Thank you!
